I Carry A Sorrow

I carry a sorrow within my soul
for this unmerciful world of men.
No voice has asked me, long ago,
if I would choose to live again.

No one has wondered, no one has known
if I would turn from mortal breath,
if I would seek another dawn
or rest beyond the veil of death.

For man has hardened into stone,
his heart grown weary, cold and dry.
No longer salt upon the earth,
he falls beneath an empty sky.

He walks through cities built of dust,
through days without a guiding flame,
forgetting why he once was born,
forgetting even his own name.

Like letters sent with no address,
like prayers unheard, like silent cries,
he wanders through forgotten streets
beneath indifferent skies.

But if I ever rise again
from earth to light, from dark to sea,
let me be wind upon the shore,
let me be wave, forever free.

Or let me be a golden fish
in quiet glass beside green leaves,
to watch the world through softer eyes
and breathe where no one grieves.
